Water, Mountains, and Meadows— oh my!

Here in the Wood River Valley, we’re a little spoiled with all of the options we have for recreation. We’re the gateway to the Sawtooth, Boulder, White Clouds, and Pioneer Mountains. We have the Big Wood River that cuts right through town. We have alpine lakes, reservoirs, and hot springs all right at our finger tips. Not only are these fantastic for recreating in/around, they also make for incredible photo backdrops! It's tempting to think you have to go far to find the perfect setting, but so many of them are right here in our backyard. Ultimately it comes down to capturing the people you love interacting in a way that feels genuine!

I have a long list of favorite spots that I go through with clients during our pre-sessions. There are so many options and the perfect location for one person just doesn’t fit for another. When we’re choosing a spot, I can help you make an informed decision based on the ages of your kids and specifics of your family (nobody wants to try and wrangle a super grumpy toddler who hiked up a hill who might be happier splashing in the water by the river), that’s the beauty of a pre-session, it’s tailored for you so we can figure out how to capture your family best! We get to talk about your wants, hopes, and dreams and come up with a plan that creates photos that you’ll cherish for a lifetime. Learn more about our pre-session process here. In the meantime, I’d like to share with you a sampling of a variety of locations based on theme: water, mountains, and meadows!

Water

The Big Wood River, Silver Creek, The Salmon, Redfish Lake, or even just the creek running through your neighborhood. From fly fishing to rafting to simply hanging out on the banks - the water-based locations offer great options for all kinds of play! I’ve shot family photos of avid anglers to the littlest of kids hanging out by the Bow Bridge. Newborn shots are a great option by the Bigwood River river, the combination of short travel plus beautiful lighting makes for fantastic portraits! Or, if you’re having your wedding at Redfish Lake you have to get at least one canoe shot in!

Meadows

Don’t underestimate the power of good foliage. Golden grass in the fall, a blank canvas of snow in the winter, bursts of wildflowers in the spring, and tall green grasses in the summer— you can’t go wrong with a field, meadow, or even your backyard! Fantastic photography spots are everywhere when you start looking around. The way the light hits the grass on your evening walk, or how the sun pours through the leaves of the trees in your backyard. Opportunities abound with foliage and lighting!

Mountains

With so many choices, finding a beautiful and unique backdrop filled with mountains is like a treasure hunt with a million jewels! We can stay local and check out the high hills and mountains of Croy Canyon in Hailey, hang out by the iconic Bald Mountain in Ketchum, see the sights out Trail Creek, or head further north to one of the many incredible trailheads. I love bringing couples out into the mountains for engagement photos or bringing kids out to the trails so they can play.
