Hiking to Pioneer Cabin

Getting outside is always good medicine. Especially here in this beautiful area that we call home. A couple of weekends ago my girls, my two nieces, our pup, and I all went for a hike up to Pioneer Cabin. It’s a big one— one that was at the top of my list to do with the kids for a long time. As any parent can probably relate to, when your kids are little, you are often putting in the time, working hard at something you think we eventually be good for them, even when it isn’t always easy. Hiking has been like that for our family. We have always enjoyed it, but there have also been lots of melt downs, lots of carrying an exhausted Kyra half the way home, and lots of skittle hiding on the trail just to get the girls to make it around the next corner.

So as you can see, hiking Pioneer Cabin with the kids was a long time coming. The trail to the cabin is an 8 mile out and back route with about 2,500 feet of elevation gain - and the girls absolutely crushed it! Although there were definitely some tears and some bickering, seeing the four of them together being silly and goofy, exhausted but full of smiles and with a great sense of accomplishment as we crossed the bridge at the end of the trail was pretty special to me. Being able to have my sister and her family so close to ours and our girls being close in age is something I will never take for granted. And even when things are hard, it’s days like this one that remind me just how incredibly lucky I am.
