On Being Excited

*Good music and interesting podcasts keep me psyched during quiet days in the studio - check out my picks from May here!

If 2020 claims to be anything - it has certainly been interesting. I have yet to find myself twiddling my thumbs, feeling the sensation of being bored, or assuming I’ll know what next week looks like. Since COVID started, like many, I’ve had to be more flexible than ever. From digging deeper at work, less summer camps happening for the kids, and keeping our day to day running smoothly - it hasn't always been easy, but it's certainly built a whole new level of resilience in my well. It seems similar to starting a yoga practice - at first, your body resists the bending and twisting, but then, over time you're suddenly touching your toes without even a twinge of resistance.

Now that we’re a few months in, being flexible and innovative feels normal. Instead of feeling stuck - I've been bending and twisting to create more opportunities to create fresh work. I've been holding photo sessions from a safe distance, pouring more time into my website (including an online booking feature!), spending time networking, and working to create better systems for both myself and my clients for when we're back to full speed again.

Resilience, courage, and determination can be fickle things - here one moment and then gone the next. In times of massive change, it's hard to constantly be at the top of our game. However, all I can ask of myself and others is to do our best. I had a friend once tell me that when they started changing their internal dialogue from "I'm afraid" or "this is hard" to "this is interesting" or "this is exciting" their experience went from stressed out to playful, energized, prepared for the challenge ahead.

I can't say that I'm never afraid, or that I don't worry about how the future will shake out. But I can tell you this - I'm also optimistic about what the future holds.

One of my favorites from a “Stay at Home” photo session with the Neet Family
