Light + Location - Picking Out Places

I feel pretty spoiled here in the Wood River Valley. From fields of wildflowers to rustic old barns to lush riverbanks, my options for creating my client’s ideal setting feel endless. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely have my tried and true places that always create amazing light and gorgeous images (I’m looking at you Draper Preserve) - but when a client comes to me during our pre-session meeting and has ideas on color, look, feel, and aesthetic, it’s really nice to have a stocked pile of ideas to pull from.

One of my most important criteria for finding a great location is how light interacts with the space. Ideally, a location has a variety of spaces where light can create a different feel for different images. Diffused light that highlights the subject. Playful light that highlights the space and creates dimension. Bright light that conveys warmth. Indirect light that can create the most beautiful close up portraits.

I love the way that practicing photography on a daily basis has changed the way I view the world. I love watching the way a landscape changes based on how natural light is hitting it. I love watching people move through a space and the way their presence changes the entire feeling of a place. The closer you look at a space the more you realize how much range there is to it.

I have a pre-session available for anyone who books a session with me so we can discuss what you want your shoot to look like. Don’t have something exactly in mind? That’s okay! I love working with clients and talking about what they don’t want, things they’ve seen that they enjoy, and then we make a plan together from there. Interested in booking a shoot? You can check out some of my options and book online here, or you can send me an e-mail at studio@devkhalsaphotography.com and we can talk about something more tailored!
