Going Beyond the Holiday Card
We’re fast approaching the season where holiday-minded shoots are getting booked left and right. With snow already on the ground in Hailey (and more on the way!) now is the time to book your session so you can have prints in hand before the holidays!
While it’s easy to peruse Pinterest and find that “one-shot” that you’re looking for - I try to steer my clients into a more holistic approach to getting both the holiday card shot they’ll love and capturing images of the little moments that feel like them and that they’ll cherish for years!
In the spirit of getting prints up on your walls (or fun gifts to give to loved ones!), we’re offering a Holiday Portrait Special! From now until November 21st, when you book a portrait session you’ll get 25% off any print products of your choice.
Not convinced yet? Below are my top tips for loving your holiday card shoot (and the images it produces!).
Tip #1 - Let it Unfold Naturally
Like with most things in life, it’s important to have some “warm-up” time during a photoshoot. For kids and adults alike, it takes time to feel comfortable in front of the camera. And while there are things we can prepare for and talk about in your pre-session meeting, there are always moments that happen organically - and often those become the family favorite shots!
There is always time for posed family portraits, but I encourage clients to invite play and silliness into their sessions as well. You’ll capture so much more of what your family is like in this very moment when you do!
Tip #2 - Think of Your Shoot as an Investment
I get a lot of requests asking for a “quick 10 minute shoot” to get the one image a family wants for their annual photo card. I understand the reasoning behind it, if you just want one image - why go into the fuss of a whole shoot? The thing to remember is you’re already investing a lot of your time in working out a plan to get that one shot, getting the family together, getting everyone dressed as you want, driving to a specific location, and then working to make the shot happen. Once you add in little ones (and maybe a pet or two), that’s a lot of work! I urge clients to invest in the hour of time; not only will we get that one shot you’re wanting for your card, but so many others you’ll cherish as well! An annual shoot is the perfect opportunity to take the time to try and capture your family as they are in this fleeting moment. Kids grow up, they evolve, they change so fast - being able to catch a moment of time for your family is a beautiful thing.
Tip #3 - Make the Most of Your Session
Most sessions that I offer last for about an hour - and there is a lot that we can pack into an hour! I encourage clients to plan for multiple outfits if that is something they are interested in, to bring the family pet, or - you can also just enjoy going with the flow (so many of my favorite images come from the inbetween moments nobody was expecting). I offer a pre-session meeting to every client; it’s a time where we can meet to get to know each other and make a plan for the day of your session. It truly helps with getting images you’ll love! You can read more about the pre-session process and why I think it’s invaluable here.
